My Top 5 Tailgating Food Tricks
Hamburgers
o Simply use a lean meat. These usually have 8 grams of fat per serving, but can go as low as 4 grams. That's a huge cut in fat and calories, without cutting out the juicy flavors!
o Load your burger up on a whole wheat bun with veggies (like lettuce, onion, tomato, etc.) and mustard. Avoid added fats like mayo.
o Make sliders. This is a great way to control your part size because the patties are made smaller to fit a small supper roll. Just be sure you don't eat too many of these babies throughout the day!
Hot Dogs
o With any hot dog, you literally want to be sure you know what it is that you're literally eating. Be sure to go all-natural, organic, or kosher whenever possible.
o Make sure to go for a low-fat hot dog. Aim for a hot dog with 1-2 grams of fat per wiener, with no more than 5-6 grams.
o Use a whole wheat bun. If you have to dress up your hot dog with extras, go for mustard, relish, and onions.
Chicken and Wings
o For a simple grilled chicken, opt for a grilling blends seasoning (like Mrs. Dash Grilling Blends) instead of Bbq sauce. You save a lot of empty fat this way.
o For chicken wings, choose a skinless chicken wing to eliminate about 5 grams of added fat and 50 calories!
Coleslaw
o This is so simple; all you do is replace the mayo or pre-made dressing with a fat-free plain yogurt. Add in a minuscule mustard, lemon juice, sea salt, pepper, and even a minuscule bit of a ranch dip mix for an added kick to a prepackaged coleslaw mix.
Potato Salad
o Just like you did with the Coleslaw, plainly substitute plain fat free yogurt for the mayo. Also, if you use any butter, try Promise Fat Free Spread (it's cardiologist recommended!).
o If you are trying to cut back on the carbs, chop up small bits of cauliflower to use in place of the potatoes.
So there you have it. Just a few easy tricks to making the best tailgating foods a minuscule bit better for you! Now you can feel free to dig into all those yummy foods as watch your popular team this season!
